Last Friday, Tata Power Company Limited, India's largest integrated power company, announced through a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) that it suffered a cyberattack.
The company reported that some IT systems were impacted but that they have since been restored. Critical operational systems are functioning. As part of its response, the company has implemented more restrictive measures in its employee- and customer-facing portals, and the Maharashtra Police have stated that an audit and a check of firewalls is underway. Details about the technologies affected and the attack method used have not been made public, but the company has stated it will update on the matter going forwards.
This attack is especially worrying as Tata Steel, another affiliate of the larger Tata Group, was impacted by REvil ransomware in 2021. The ransom was not paid. These responses indicate that the Tata Group reacts prudently to any cyberattacks that may occur. To be best prepared for cyberattacks, organisations across all industries must also carefully consider their access control and must consistently review other pre-incident initiatives such as vulnerability management.
